Hope for Justice has launched a new campaign to bring freedom For The 50.
There are almost 50 million people – men, women and children – trapped in modern slavery around the world today. That’s 1 in every 150 people.
The official figure, 49.6 million, is likely to be a vast underestimate because this is a hidden crime.
We’re raising awareness of this issue – the more people who know about it, the more hope we have of ending it. We’re asking you to get involved – this is the fastest growing crime in the world and we need every person to do their part in preventing it. And we’re raising money – to support our global work to combat modern slavery and human trafficking.
You can join in the campaign in the following ways:
- Sign up to receive our emails and find out how you can be part of the anti-trafficking movement
- Share our ‘For The 50’ symbol on social media to raise awareness (see example below)
- Fundraise For The 50 – support our work to bring freedom from modern slavery
World Day Against Trafficking in Persons
Our campaign coincides with World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30th July, which is organised annually by the United Nations. The day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”
Their focus for 2024 is the urgent need to end child trafficking. A total of 1 in 3 victims of human trafficking globally is a child.
We want to bring freedom to every single one of the men, women and children who are being exploited.
What does ‘bringing freedom’ mean to us?
‘Bringing freedom’ means people living free from exploitation, and free from the fear of being exploited. It means survivors having the power, agency and opportunity to make choices about their own future, living in dignity. It means safer communities in which vulnerability to human trafficking is transformed into resilience. And it means improving the response, partnering with other agencies and civil society, while standing with survivors to create a world in which everyone can live free from slavery.
How you can get involved in For The 50
More details of how you can be involved in the For The 50 campaign are below:
- Join our mailing list for updates, ways to get involved and practical tips such as how to spot the signs of modern slavery and human trafficking.
- Create the For The 50 symbol and share it on social media to raise awareness about the issue.
Use both hands – hold up five fingers on one hand and make a fist with the other. This symbol represents the number 50. Then, ask someone to take a photo and share this on social media. This is a symbol to show you’re standing up for the 50 million people in modern slavery. We’re encouraging you to share the image with the hashtag #forthefifty - Fundraise For The 50. We’ve compiled a list of more than 40 ways you can raise money for Hope for Justice.
Among the fundraisers taking place in support of For The 50 campaign is a 50km walk in a single day. You can find out more and donate to the JustGiving page here.
