According to the International Labor Organization, the latest global estimates published in 2022 indicate that 50 million people live in conditions of modern-day slavery. The circumstances seem to be deteriorating around this issue, likely due to a combination of factors such as social and economic repercussions from the ongoing worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, as the number of people exploited rose from 40.3 million in 2016 to 49.6 million in 2021.
