Celebrating the impact of Self-Help Groups in Ethiopia

More than 200 people gathered at a Hope for Justice event to celebrate the impact of our Self-Help Groups in the South Ethiopia Region.

The groups empower women by offering the skills and means to start their own businesses. They provide a community network from which they can build their social, economic and emotional strength.

The event was celebrated in the Wolaita Zone, specifically in Kindo Didaye Woreda. It commemorated the success and progress of 45 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) over the past three years.

Members were joined by staff and key stakeholders including community leaders and government representatives, who gathered to honour the achievements of the groups.

As part of the event, the SHGs took the opportunity to thank key individuals who have played an instrumental role in their journey, including Wolaita Project Manager, Selamu Yigezu, Regional MEAL Officer, Ashenafi Letebo, and Project Officer, Demise Derecho.

Ashenafi Letebo, Hope for Justice’s Regional Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) Officer, said: “The anniversary celebration was more than just a festive occasion; it was a powerful testament to the strength, resilience and unity of the Self-Help Group members. Self-Help Groups play a vital role in driving positive change. This gathering was a vivid reminder of the power of collective action and the impact it can have on the lives of individuals and their communities.”

Our SHGs are located in areas where human trafficking is most prevalent. Their members, usually women, meet weekly to learn business and financial management skills, and save money as a group. The group then provides loans to its members, to enable them to create their own small businesses.
